For more than 20 years, Ari Kandel has trained in the martial arts, including karate, taekwondo, judo, jeet kune do, systema, combatives, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts. He holds instructor ranks in wing tsun and escrima.

Under the tutelage of military veteran Al Ridenhour and Guided Chaos founder and police officer John Perkins, he learned through the training methods of this unusual, free-flowing art to adapt to and thrive in the chaos that is real violence.

Kandel holds a third-degree black belt in Guided Chaos and Perkins’ Close Combat, and he regularly assists his instructors with teaching and writing. He has contributed to the expanded second edition of the book Attack Proof, due out in early 2009; has appeared in several Guided Chaos instructional DVDs; and posts regularly on his training blog.
